The first chapter starts out making you wonder why does this vine seem to be alive, wriggling into his hand? Who is this woman being followed? Why is she up towards the boundy? What are these four others planning for her?
However, I did enjoy the use of words. How Terry seems to know what words to make everything seems intruiging and simple. All at the same time, Maintaining an almost modern sense about things.
Starting off describing the the odd looking vine. Which leads into Richard's surroundings and remembering days when Zedd and his father George Cypher would teach and train him in the different ways of the woods. Finding out that his father has just passed three days before and his mother passed when he was very young. Instantly making you feel sorrow for this man.
Terry then mentions how Richard's brother, Michael, forbade him to go searching for the killer. Richard immediately left without saying anything to anyone. You then find that his father, George, would leave things for him in that spot that the piece of vine had been left in. While trying to untangle some of the vine from a tree it lashes out and punctures his hand with a big thorn. Richard shows his resourcefulness by using the aum root as a natural remedy. The vine was choking out the life of the forest. It was evil.
The woods then become deathly quiet. Richard then spots something big and redd high in the sky. He runs after it and thinks about telling Michael. Richard quickly shruggs off that idea since his brother would be angry for not doing what he was told. He hated his brother always telling him and thier father what to do.
As he looks down at a lake he find a woman going down the trail being followed by four other people. Richard feels compeled to help her.
Overall, I feel this is a very unique and interesting way to begin a book. A charcter that is immediatly identifiable. With good values at his core. Within the first seven pages author Goodkind already has you wondering about several things. What wast that in the sky? Why does Michael feel it neccassary to be boss to both his kin?
Next Chapter Two!
I invite all to discuss and share thier own opinions on the first chapter of book one. I only ask that you keep it clean. Please no profanity. I would like everyone to feel welcome. Thanks.
